Lorelei's Reader Challenge

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

So here Lorelei issued a design challenge to her readers. Today I went to Michael's and purchased the beads to complete the challenge. They were out of the small green pearls that she bought, so I purchased some that are a little larger. I do have a couple tiny green pearls. Not sure which I will use. If I need more than 2, I have to use the ones I bought.
Now I just have to get my rear in gear and create something before Sunday.

Seriously though, Michael's is evil! I cannot go in there and spend just a little bit. I always see other things I want/need/lust and end up spending too much! lol

Flea Market Finds

Saturday, October 9, 2010

I went to our local flea market today and got some cool junk jewelry to make into new things.
Some of it was in larger bags, so it's not all "good junk" but there are some cool things in what I got.

A tip for flea market sellers. When you have a customer that has been standing there sorting through items, don't sell the whole batch out from under them. I had been standing at this table a good five minutes going through a suitcase full of old jewelry. A man walked up and wanted to buy the whole thing. Instead of letting the customer that was there first (me) finish shopping, then wheel and deal with the next customer, they sold what was left for one price. They told me I could buy what I already had set aside.

I mean seriously! That was R U D E! If I had not really wanted what I had already, I would have given them a FU and walked away. They saw how ticked I was and gave me what I had for almost half price, but still. If I see them again, I will just keep walking.

Seriously.. you need to read this blog!

Hyperbole and a Half

Saturday Fun

Saturday, October 2, 2010

I created this necklace today! It's made from black quartz beads, lava beads, black cinnabar and some lovely brass. I think it's done but I have to look at it a bit longer before deciding it is ready to be listed.

Thinking and Pondering

Friday, October 1, 2010

Ok so earlier here, I was talking about separating my jewelry into two shops. I was thinking about it again today. The thing is, "Designs By Debi" is so...generic sounding. I would leave the more "generic, assembled" type jewelry in Designs By Debi and put the cooler, vintage-y things in the new shop.

So today I was trying to come up with a new shop name. I really love some of the cool names some other Etsy sellers use. Like Opulent Oddities, Fanciful Devices, Covetable Curiosities and Sparrow Salvage. I'm throwing around words like -Profuse- Copious- Prolific- Gadgets- Doodads- Whimsy and Apparatuses. My brain is on serious Dictionary/Thesaurus overload.

The Colors of Nature

Artists are inspired by so many things around them- patterns, shapes and colors. Nature is a wonderful place to find inspiration. This bug (I have no idea what it is) was crawling along my deck railing. I showed the picture to my daughter and she said that it looked like it had been bedazzled or had sequins all over it. lol Please do click on it to see a larger view. :)

Showing My Face....book

Patinas and Silk

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Speaking earlier of thinking outside of the box, here are some things I recently purchased. I bought a pile of the lovely Sari Silk. It's my first fair trade purchase. :) I created a lovely bracelet with it already and listed it in my shop.

The mandrels are so cool. Four different shapes for making new cool findings. I bought them here.

The patinas are from MissFickleMedia. I've only tried out one so far and the results were pretty good.

Things in the Works & New Beads

I am working on this cool glass and paper pendant. All foiled wrapped and ready to solder. I actually have not created a soldered glass pendant before, so this should be an adventure.

It really is time for me to think outside the box though. Although I do create some jewelry that is what some would call "assembly" type jewelry, I love to create the parts and pieces myself. That's the only way you can have truly unique items.

Bought these new beads. I love black! Above are cinnabar, lava and a couple others. The ones at the very top are black quartz. They are really awesome! I hope they aren't too heavy for earrings.
